The Sports bursaries are not included in the Bursaries and Loans Yearbook.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/sport\/?lang=en\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Maties Sport<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_Bursaries_all_included_in_the_Calendar\"\/><strong><br \/><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>A large number of general bursaries for study in any faculty, as well as bursaries for study in a specific faculty or department, are described in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sun.ac.za\/english\/Documents\/Yearbooks\/Current\/2020-Eng-BursariesAndLoans.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Calendar\u200b<\/span>\u200b<\/a>\u00a0and are available to students who are academically deserving and\/or financially needy.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%8BFirst-year_merit_bursaries\"\/>\u200bFirst-year merit bursaries<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>In respect of First-year Merit Bursaries, the criterion used is the actual average of a prospective student\u2019s final Grade 12 exam results (calculated based on a combination of the six best subjects required to gain admission to Baccalaureus studies at a university, excluding Life Orientation and Mathematics Paper 3), as indicated by the respective education departments. \u200b\u200b<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Merit Bursaries are calculated as a percentage of the basic\u00a0tuition fees (excluding module costs). Following registration and once results have been announced, an algorithm with a given budget amount and fixed budget parameters is used to calculate the amounts to be allocated. The calculated amounts are then automatically transferred to the beneficiaries\u2019 student accounts in April.<\/p>\n<p>The following scale is applicable to first-year merit bursaries<\/p>\n<table class=\"ms-rteTable-default\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"ms-rteTableEvenRow-default\">\n<td class=\"ms-rteTableEvenCol-default\">\u200bMatric average<\/td>\n<td class=\"ms-rteTableOddCol-default\">\u200b% rebate on basic tuition fees (excluding module cost and\/or programme cost)*<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"ms-rteTableOddRow-default\">\n<td class=\"ms-rteTableEvenCol-default\">\u200b90% or higher<\/td>\n<td class=\"ms-rteTableOddCol-default\">\u200bup to\u00a040%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u200b<\/p>\n<p>*Module cost and\/or programme cost, which may include the following: materials fees, laboratory fees, travelling expenses, running costs, programme levy and the membership dues for any faculty-bound, academic societies, as applicable to a programme or module.<\/p>\n<p>Important: Only students who completed their exam two or more years prior to the year in which they plan to join the University, as well as candidates who completed their exam outside the provincial education departments, are required to apply for these merit bursaries by submitting a certified copy of their matric certificate to the Undergraduate Bursary Office.\u200b The onus rests on the student to verify by June of the specific academic year in which they are entitled to a merit bursary to ensure that it reflects in their student fee account. The student will forfeit their claim to a merit bursary if it does not reflect in their account, and the student failed to notify the Centre by the end of August.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Senior Merit Bursaries<\/p>\n<p>In respect of Senior Merit Bursaries, the criterion used is the\u00a0weighted average\u00a0of the exam results for the previous year of study. Senior Merit Bursaries are\u00a0calculated as a percentage of\u00a0basic\u00a0tuition fees (excluding module costs and\/or programme cost)*.\u00a0\u00a0As the allocation of these bursaries is an automatic, computerised process, students do not need to submit an application.<\/p>\n<p>*Module cost and\/or programme cost, which may include the following: materials fees, laboratory fees, travelling expenses, running costs, programme levy and the membership dues for any faculty-bound, academic societies, as applicable to a programme or module.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n<p><span>Senior merit bursaries are awarded to the top\u00a05% per faculty. Qualifying students will receive a rebate of 20% on basic tuition fees (excluding module costs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Criteria for merit bursaries:<\/p>\n<p>Candidates for senior merit awards shall:<\/p>\n<p><em>Important:\u00a0<\/em>The onus rests on the student to verify by June of the specific academic year in which they are entitled to a merit bursary to ensure that it reflects in their student fee account. The student will forfeit their claim to a merit bursary if it does not reflect in their account, and the student failed to notify the Centre by the end of August.<\/p>\n<p>Cancellation or reduction of merit bursaries<\/p>\n<p>US merit bursaries may not be kept in conjunction with an other bursary. The University reserves the right to decrease or cancel the offer accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>The merit bursaries of students who discontinues their studies in the first semester, will be cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>Merit bursaries to students that studied at other institutions<\/p>\n<p>Students who studied at other institutions, do not qualify for First-year Merit Bursaries, but can be considered for Senior Merit Bursaries if their weighted average was 75% or higher. SU LOAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University\u00a0offers tuition loans\u00a0for students from the missing middle household.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Loans for the income group between R350 000 \u2013 R600 000 (subject to availability of funds)<\/li>\n<li>Households with income between R600 000 \u2013 R1 million with two \/ more children at a tertiary institution are also considered\u00a0for a 50% tuition fee loan<\/li>\n<li>Interest-free loans repayable at the prime interest rate<\/li>\n<li>Only the tuition fee is covered by the US Loan (includes registration fee)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. NSFAS BURSARY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Follow the NSFAS link:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsfas.org.za\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cFully subsidized free higher education and training for poor and working class South Africans\u201d \u2013 up to R350 000 household income per year<\/li>\n<li>Bursaries are available only for new first-time admitted students to undergraduate studies at public higher education institutions<\/li>\n<li>The bursary includes the following study costs: tuition, accommodation and books, cost allowance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%8BClosing_dates_for_applications\"\/><strong\/><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>All bursary and loan a\u200bpplications administered by the University:<strong>\u00a031 August<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Last day to submit all documents:\u00a0\u200b11 September.\u00a0<em>No incomplete applications will be considered after this date<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Private companies have different closing dates for their bursaries.
