About the conference<\/h3>\n

We are delighted to announce that in 2020, the Centre for the Study of African Economies will hold its first-ever conference dedicated to China\u2013Africa economic engagement. Empirical papers on the broad theme of China\u2019s economic, development and political economy relationships with the African continent are invited. Suitable topics include, but are not limited to: aid, trade, foreign direct investment, industrialisation, public debt, Belt and Road Initiative, environmental sustainability, governance, and institutions<\/p>\n

Keynote speaker: Prof. Deborah Br\u00e4utigam (Johns Hopkins University SAIS-CARI).<\/strong>
Alongside a keynote address and plenary panels, there will be parallel sessions where academics will present their empirical research. For these sessions, we will be looking for contributions on the broad theme of China\u2019s economic and development relationships with Africa.<\/p>\n

Convening panel: Meredith Crowley, Stefan Dercon, Lizzie Dipple, Markus Eberhardt, Pascal Jaupart, Benno Ndulu, Lina Song, and Adrian Wood.<\/p>\n

Pre event in China<\/h3>\n

The early submission deadline for the CSAE China-Africa conference is no longer active. There will not be a pre-event this year, and therefore all submissions will be reviewed after the main deadline on 25 October 2019. If anyone has already submitted their paper and wishes to resubmit an updated version to\u00a0csae.conference@economics.ox.ac.uk<\/span>\u00a0for the October deadline, they are welcome to do so.<\/p>\n

How do I submit a paper for consideration?<\/h3>\n

The call for papers is now open! Please submit your paper and abstract for consideration via email to\u00a0csae.conference@economics.ox.ac.uk<\/span>\u00a0with the text \u201cChina\u2013Africa conference submission\u201d in the subject line.<\/p>\n

Both papers and extended abstracts are accepted, but priority will be given to full drafts of papers. Please ensure your paper also includes a short abstract (up to 500 words).<\/p>\n

Papers should be attached to a submission email that contains the following details:<\/p>\n

  1. Title of paper being submitted;<\/li>\n
  2. Up to three subject keywords \u2013 such as trade, BRI, political economy, aid;<\/li>\n
  3. Submitting author details (full name, address, email, and institution);<\/li>\n
  4. Indication if applying for travel funding (Yes or No \u2013 see below for more details);<\/li>\n
  5. Indication if want to be considered for possible pre-event in China (Yes or No \u2013 see below for more details);<\/li>\n
  6. Paper abstract (max 500 words).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
