{"id":12906,"date":"2022-06-21T15:56:42","date_gmt":"2022-06-21T15:56:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uptymes.com\/edu\/commonwealth-split-site-scholarships-for-phd-students-in-uk-2020\/"},"modified":"2022-06-21T15:56:42","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T15:56:42","slug":"commonwealth-split-site-scholarships-for-phd-students-in-uk-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uptymes.com\/edu\/commonwealth-split-site-scholarships-for-phd-students-in-uk-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships for PhD Students in UK 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK is offering the Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships (for low and middle-income countries) to spend up to 12 months at a UK university as part of their doctoral studies in their home country in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. These scholarships are offered under six themes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Science and technology for development<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening health systems and capacity<\/li>\n<li>Promoting global prosperity<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening global peace, security and governance<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening resilience and response to crises<\/li>\n<li>Access, inclusion and opportunity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The purpose is to widen access to UK equipment and expertise for high-quality doctoral candidates from low and middle-income Commonwealth countries and to contribute to UK and Commonwealth higher education and research through collaboration and partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>Intended beneficiaries are high-quality graduates whose proposed research has a developmental focus and who have the potential to become influential teachers or researchers in their home countries.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worth_of_Award\"\/><strong>Worth of Award<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h4>\n<div>\n<p>Each scholarship provides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor the cost of journeys made before your award is confirmed)<\/li>\n<li>Approved tuition fees<\/li>\n<li>Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of \u00a31,110 per month, or \u00a31,362 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2019-20 levels)<\/li>\n<li>Warm clothing allowance, where applicable<\/li>\n<li>Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas<\/li>\n<li>If you are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of \u00a3476 per month for the first child, and \u00a3117 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Eligibility\"\/><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h4>\n<div>\n<p>To apply for these scholarships, you must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person<\/li>\n<li>Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country<\/li>\n<li>Be registered for a PhD at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country by the time your scholarship is confirmed<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that an institutional or departmental link exists between your home university and your proposed UK university. This link must be greater than simply a collaboration between individuals. Both supervisors must provide a supporting statement which includes details of the link in order for your application to be eligible.<\/li>\n<li>Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September\/October 2020<\/li>\n<li>By October 2020, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master\u2019s degree)<\/li>\n<li>Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligible Commonwealth countries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Antigua and Barbuda<br \/>Bangladesh<br \/>Belize<br \/>Botswana<br \/>Cameroon<br \/>Dominica<br \/>Eswatini<br \/>Fiji<br \/>Ghana<br \/>Grenada<br \/>Guyana<br \/>India<br \/>Jamaica<br \/>Kenya<br \/>Kiribati<br \/>Lesotho<br \/>Malawi<br \/>Malaysia<br \/>Mauritius<br \/>Montserrat<br \/>Mozambique<br \/>Namibia<br \/>Nauru<br \/>Nigeria<br \/>Pakistan<br \/>Papua New Guinea<br \/>Rwanda<br \/>St Helena<br \/>St Lucia<br \/>St Vincent and the Grenadines<br \/>Samoa<br \/>Sierra Leone<br \/>Solomon Islands<br \/>South Africa<br \/>Sri Lanka<br \/>Tanzania<br \/>The Gambia<br \/>Tonga<br \/>Tuvalu<br \/>Uganda<br \/>Vanuatu<br \/>Zambia<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Apply\"\/><strong>How to Apply<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>You should apply to study at a UK university which has a part funding agreement with the CSC. Part funding agreements are at the discretion of individual universities. For a list of universities that have agreed to part fund Commonwealth Scholarships, visit <\/li>\n<li>You must make your application directly to the CSC using the CSC\u2019s online application system. The CSC will not accept any applications that are not submitted via the online application system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your application must include the following supporting documentation by the deadline in order for your application to be eligible for consideration:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Copy of your valid passport (or national ID card) showing your photograph, date of birth, and country of citizenship \u2013 uploaded to the online application system<\/li>\n<li>Full transcripts detailing all your higher education qualifications (with certified translations if not in English) \u2013 uploaded to the online application system<\/li>\n<li>Supporting statement from your supervisor at your home country university, which must include details of the institutional link between the university where you are\/will be registered for your PhD and your proposed UK university \u2013 submitted directly by your supervisor to the online application system (supervisors will be sent an email request).<\/li>\n<li>Supporting statement from your proposed supervisor at a UK university, which must include details of the institutional link between the university where you are\/will be registered for your PhD and your proposed UK university \u2013 submitted directly by your supervisor to the online application system (supervisors will be sent an email request).<\/li>\n<li>Reference from at least one other individual \u2013 submitted directly by the referee to the online application system (referees will be sent an email request)<\/li>\n<li>The CSC will not accept supporting documentation submitted outside the online application system.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting documentation uploaded to the online application system must be uploaded as files which are no more than 5 MB in size and must be in one of the following formats: PDF, .doc, .docx, .odt, .jpg, .jpeg. Files submitted in any other format (including Zip files and PDF Portfolios) will NOT be accepted.<\/li>\n<li>Only one application per applicant for these scholarships will be accepted. Only the application with the latest submission date, including submission of references and supporting statements, will be accepted.
