Admission Requirement

The UG admits all students without any discrimination of race, nationality, region, or religion. The UG’s program selects candidates who demonstrate the potential to become Rwandan’s future health care leaders. We welcome all students having obtained an Advanced General Certificate of Secondary Education with at least two principal passes permitting him/her an entry to the higher education or equivalent.

The admission process identifies the best possible candidates for the medical school through assessing each applicant’s overall achievements, including those in academic and non-academic areas. It is understood that academic excellence is necessary, but not sufficient, to ensure success as a physician. As a multitude of factors are used to determine candidates to be selected, and as the applicant pool varies in qualifications from year to year, there will be an overlap in the distribution of scores, and other criteria in accepted and declined candidates, and not all candidates who meet minimum academic requirements will be offered a position.

In short, the candidate should fulfill the following requirements:

  •  The candidate should have followed PCB, MCB, and BCG in Secondary School
  •  Biology being the main core –lesson, a student filling the 1st principal must have obtained a passing score in this lesson.
  •  The candidate must have obtained an aggregate of at least 40 marks.
  •  He/she must have an aggregate of 24marks in both biology and any other subject in total.

Program Profile

The undergraduate program is 6 years, divided into two stages: Pre-clinical course and Clinical Medicine. The 1st and 2nd years of the course are the foundations of the Medicine program which aims at introducing students to the fundamental aspects of the structure and function of the healthy body, and to the basic mechanisms underlying disease. Students learn the principles of both medical sociology and of psychology for Medicine and consider the experimental evidence that supports our scientific understanding. Students learn about the scientific method, experimental techniques, and data interpretation; and become increasingly critical of what they read in books and learn in lectures.

The clinical program comprises a series of modules that revisit and build upon the knowledge base that was established in Foundations of Medicine 1 and 2. The normal and abnormal structure and function of each of the body systems (e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, neurological, and endocrine) are studied in depth, students examine the scientific basis of important disease mechanisms and therapeutic treatment in each of the body systems.

Students learn to take a history, perform physical examinations relating to each system, and interpret the investigation results. An internship and final year dissertation are reserved for final graduating students of this faculty.
