Applying for financial aid can seem daunting, but the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has streamlined the process for South African students. Here’s a simple guide to help you apply for NSFAS funding online:


1. Prepare Necessary Documents

Before you start your application, ensure you have electronic (scanned) copies of the following:

  • South African ID or birth certificate/passport for international students.
  • IDs of parents and/or guardian.
  • Proof of income or an affidavit if your parents/guardians are unemployed.
  • Latest academic results.
  • If you have a disability, a completed Disability Annexure A (available on NSFAS website).

2. Visit the NSFAS Website


3. Register on the “myNSFAS” Portal

  • Click on the “myNSFAS” tab.
  • If you’re a new user, select the “Register” option to create an account.
  • Fill out the required fields, set up a password, and then submit your registration.

4. Activate Your Account

  • After registering, you’ll receive an activation link via email. Click on this link to activate your account.

5. Start the Application

  • Once logged in, click on the “Apply” tab.
  • Carefully read through and understand the introduction page.
  • Click “Apply” to proceed.

6. Fill in the Application Form

  • The application consists of several sections like personal details, guardian/parent details, and academic details.
  • Fill in each section meticulously, ensuring accuracy.

7. Upload Required Documents

  • At this stage, you’ll be asked to upload the electronic copies of the necessary documents. Ensure that the scans are clear and legible.

8. Review and Submit

  • Before submitting, review all sections of the application to ensure all data is accurate.
  • Once satisfied, click “Submit.”

9. Application Reference Number

  • After submission, you will receive an application reference number. Keep this number safe, as it will be important for tracking your application status.

10. Await Feedback

  • Once submitted, your application will be reviewed by NSFAS. This can take some time, especially during peak periods.
  • You’ll be notified of your application outcome through the contact details you provided.
