SUA university Botanic Garden  constitutes a documented living collection of living plants for various purposes such as education, scientific research, conservation and recreation/display.

 

The idea of establishing Botanic Garden at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) was initiated by the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, then a Chancellor of the University in 1986.

Botanic Garden at the University was therefore created with the intention to serve the following functions:

Educational;

  • To the public on the diversity and distribution of various plant species;
  • To the students and academic members of staff within the University.

Research;

– On morphology, anatomy, breeding, etc.

  1. Germplasm collection for wild and cultivated plant species, including introduction of new plant crops;
  2. Conservation of endangered plant species of Tanzania;
  3. Maintenance of natural vegetation reserve so as to demonstrate types of natural vegetation of Tanzania and/or Africa;
  4. Collection and maintenance of various species with medicinal values;
  5. Ecological collection so as to show different plant adaptations to different ecological conditions;
  6. Recreation – to the University and non-University communities.

SUA Botanic Garden occupies an area of about 48 hectares located at the University farm. From inception a total of 247 shrub/tree species have so far been planted in various blocks of the Garden, covering about 13 hectares. In addition, some avenues and paths have been marked and planted with various plants.
